Choosing a home office desk in Dubai: size, light and a surface that lasts

Jeffrey home office desk in sealed birch plywood with soft-close drawers, placed side-on to a window in a Dubai apartment, made to order by Plyconcept

The right home office desk for a Dubai apartment is the longest one the wall will take, placed side-on to the window, with somewhere for the cables to go and a surface that does not mind a coffee cup and a laptop every day for years. Most of the choices after that are about how you work: one screen or two, one person or two, a laptop that travels or a desktop that stays. This guide covers desk length, window glare, cables and monitor arms, why a sealed birch plywood surface holds up to daily use, and how to pair a desk with a sideboard so the room still looks like a home when the laptop closes.

Working from home in a Dubai apartment

Very few UAE apartments were planned with an office in them. The desk goes in a spare bedroom if there is one, and if there is not it goes in the corner of the living room, the end of the dining space, or the wide bit of a hallway. Wherever it goes, it is on show. That is the first thing that changes when you work from home: the desk is furniture, not equipment, and it has to look right when the day ends and someone sits on the sofa opposite it.

The second thing is that it gets used more than any other piece in the flat. All day, every working day, with a hot laptop, a cup, a forearm resting on the front edge and a chair rolling underneath. A desk that was fine for an hour of admin on a Sunday is a different thing under that load. Choose it the way you would choose a dining table you will eat at every day.

Desk length: Regular or Lungo

The Jeffrey birch plywood desk comes in two lengths, Regular and Lungo, and the choice is the first real decision. Regular is a desk for one person: a laptop, a monitor, a notebook and a coffee, with a drawer for the things that would otherwise pile up. Lungo is a desk for two people side by side, or for one person with two monitors, a printer at one end and space to spread paper. It also makes a homework desk two teenagers can share without elbows.

The rule is to buy for how you actually work, not for the tidy version of it. If you have a monitor and a laptop open beside it, a stack of paper you are supposed to have filed, and a second cup, the Regular will feel full. If you sit with a laptop and nothing else, the Lungo will feel like a boardroom. Measure the wall, then measure what is on your desk today, and dimensions for both lengths are on the product page.

Light: window glare and where to put the desk

Dubai apartments have big windows and strong light, and the mistake almost everyone makes is to face the desk into the view. For a while it is lovely, and then the afternoon sun is in your eyes and on your screen for three hours a day. The opposite mistake is putting your back to the window, so that every video call has you in silhouette and the screen becomes a mirror.

Put the desk side-on to the window. Daylight comes across the surface, the screen stays readable, and your face is lit for calls without being lit from behind. Sheer curtains take the edge off the afternoon without making the room dark. Then think about evenings, because the working day in the UAE often runs into them: a pendant over the desk, rather than a downlight behind you, lights the surface without putting your own shadow on the page. A Celeste birch plywood pendant lamp on its adjustable chain does that job over a desk in a living room without looking like office lighting.

One more thing about the sun: it warms the tone of birch over the years. A desk that sits in direct afternoon light will mellow, evenly if nothing sits in one place for months, unevenly if the monitor stand never moves. Sheers solve most of it.

Cables and monitor arms

Cables are the difference between a home office and a desk with a computer on it. Every desk gathers a power adaptor, a monitor lead, a charger, a lamp, sometimes a second screen and a dock. The Jeffrey has cable management built in, so the leads drop through and run behind rather than over the front edge and across the floor to the socket. Still, a few habits help whatever the desk: one power strip fixed to the underside or the wall, one route for everything, and the lamp and the charger on the side nearest the socket.

Monitor arms are the other question. A clamp arm frees the surface and lets you push the screen away for paperwork, but it needs a solid top to bite on. A birch plywood top is solid through its whole thickness, so a clamp holds; a hollow-core flat-pack top does not, and the clamp crushes it. Ask before you fix anything to a desk, and put a small piece of felt or leather between the clamp pad and the sealed surface so it does not mark.

A surface that takes daily use

A desk top gets more wear than any other surface in a home: forearms, watch straps, a mouse, a warm laptop, the rim of a cup. The reason we make desks from sealed birch plywood rather than a veneer or a laminate is that the material is the same all the way through. The sealer takes the daily wiping, and if it is ever scuffed the wood under it is birch, not a paper print. Wipe with a damp cloth and a dry one; use a coaster; keep the laptop on its own feet so the warm underside is not sitting on the wood all day.

The front edge matters more on a desk than anywhere else, because your wrists rest on it. On the Jeffrey it is the layered plywood edge, sanded until the stripes read as one surface and rounded so a forearm meets a curve rather than a corner. The drawers are soft-close, which sounds like a small thing until the third time in a day you push one shut with your knee. For the full cleaning routine and what never to use on a sealed surface, our guide to caring for birch plywood furniture in Dubai covers it.

Storage: pairing the desk with a sideboard

A desk with drawers holds pens and chargers. It does not hold a printer, a box of files, a scanner or the reference books, and if those end up on the floor beside the desk the room stops being a home. A sideboard against the wall behind or beside the desk takes all of it. The Jeffrey open plywood sideboard shares its name and its end-grain slats with the desk, and its open arched front means the printer and the files are reached without opening a door. In the same finish, the two read as one piece of furniture rather than an office that has moved in.

If the desk is in a living room, a reading chair a few steps away with a Luna round plywood coffee table beside it gives you somewhere to take calls away from the screen, which is better for the call and for the back.

How you work, and which desk

How you work Desk choice Notes
Laptop only, some days a week Regular Side-on to the window; a drawer for the charger and notebook
Laptop and one monitor, every day Regular Monitor on an arm if you also use paper; cables through the desk
Two monitors, or a monitor and a laptop stand Lungo Room for both screens and the notebook between them
Two people sharing Lungo One power strip, two routes; agree who gets the window side
Homework desk for teenagers Regular for one, Lungo for two Drawers for the things that otherwise cover the surface
Desk in a living room Either, in the finish of the room Pair with an open sideboard so the printer is not on the floor
Calls most of the day Either, side-on to the window Pendant over the desk for evenings; a chair away from the screen for long calls

From the workshop

A desk is one of the few pieces where we think about the underside as much as the top, because that is where the hands go. The drawer boxes are cut from the same birch as the carcass and run on soft-close runners that are fitted and adjusted before the desk is finished, then removed so every edge of the drawer front, including the back face that meets the carcass, is sealed. The cable opening is cut and its inside edge sanded and sealed like any other edge, because a cable dragged over a raw plywood edge will fray it in a year. The front edge gets a little more time under the sander than the rest, so a wrist resting there for a working day meets something closer to a pebble than a board. The desk leaves the workshop assembled, wrapped in blanket and film, and arrives ready to be placed and plugged in.

Frequently asked questions

Which desk length do I need for a home office in Dubai?

Regular for one person with a laptop and a monitor; Lungo for two people, two monitors, or a shared homework desk. Measure the wall and what is on your desk today. Dimensions for both are on the product page.

Where should a desk go in relation to the window?

Side-on. Facing the window puts the sun in your eyes and on the screen; backing onto it puts you in silhouette on calls. Sheers take the edge off the afternoon.

Can I fit a monitor arm to a plywood desk?

Yes. A birch plywood top is solid through its thickness, so a clamp arm holds. Put a piece of felt between the clamp and the sealed surface, and ask us before drilling anything.

Does the Jeffrey desk have cable management?

Yes. Cables drop through the desk and run behind rather than over the front edge. It also has soft-close drawers.

How do I look after a desk that is used every day?

A damp cloth and a dry one, a coaster, and the laptop on its own feet. No spray polish, no abrasive cleaners. The sealed surface does the rest.

Does the desk arrive assembled?

Yes. It is made to order in our own Dubai workshop, and delivered assembled across the UAE. The current lead time is shown at checkout.
