Most families move a toddler to a floor bed somewhere between the first birthday and the third, and there is no single right age. Two routes are common: starting on a floor bed from the early months, or making the move when the child starts climbing the cot, which for many children falls between 18 months and two and a half. Readiness matters more than the date, and in a UAE apartment or villa the room has to be ready as well as the child. This guide lays out the age windows, the signs to look for, and what to do to the room before the first night.
Floor bed age guide: what tends to happen when
Children vary, and so do parents. The table is a map, not a rule.
| Age | What is usually going on | Floor bed? | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Birth to 6 months | Sleeping in a bassinet, cot or beside a parent; not yet mobile. | Some Montessori families start here with a mattress on the floor and nothing else in reach. | A completely clear sleep surface. A frame with a low lip is for later. |
| 6 to 12 months | Rolling, sitting, crawling, pulling up. Everything goes in the mouth. | Possible with a fully proofed room and a gate at the door. | Sockets, cords, anything that tips. The room is the cot now. |
| 12 to 18 months | Walking, climbing, testing edges. Often the first attempts to climb out of a cot. | A common starting point. The child can get in and out and understands "bed". | Night wandering. Furniture anchored to the wall. |
| 18 months to 2 years | Language arrives, so does opinion. Cot climbing becomes a safety issue rather than a party trick. | The most common window for making the move. | A low rail helps sleepers who roll. Keep the routine identical to the cot routine. |
| 2 to 3 years | Potty training, big feelings, the arrival of a sibling for many families. | Very common, often prompted by a new baby needing the cot. | Make the bed about the child, not the baby. Give them time to own it before the cot goes. |
| 3 years and up | Preschool, longer stretches of independent play, reading on the bed. | Easy transition; a floor bed with a 90 × 200 cm mattress will last through primary school. | Mostly nothing. Enjoy it. |
Signs your toddler is ready for a floor bed
Age is a rough guide. These are the things that actually tell you the time has come.
- They are climbing the cot. Once a child has a leg over the rail, the cot is no longer the safer option. A fall from cot height onto a tiled UAE floor is the thing a floor bed prevents.
- They can get down from a sofa safely. Feet first, on purpose. That is the same movement as leaving a floor bed.
- They understand simple boundaries. "Bed is for sleeping" and "stay in your room" do not need to be obeyed perfectly, only understood.
- They settle themselves at least some of the time. A child who already falls asleep without being held will find the move easier. A child who does not can still make the move; expect more nights of walking them back.
- You are ready. The first stretch involves a child who can get up. If you are in the middle of a house move, a new job, or a newborn, it is fine to wait.
What changes at 18 months, 2 and 3
Around 18 months
This is where the physical case for a floor bed is strongest. Climbing is new and clumsy, and a cot rail is exactly the wrong height. At this age children also start to want the things they see: the book on the shelf, the toy in the basket. A floor bed with a front-facing Sofi Toddler Bookcase beside it turns early waking into quiet reading, at least some mornings.
Around 2
Two-year-olds want to do it themselves and are furious when they cannot. A bed they can get into on their own removes one nightly argument. It is also the age at which the cot most often has to be handed on to a new sibling, so the move can come with a sense of loss if it is rushed. Let the child choose the bedding, help carry the pillow, "show" the new bed to grandparents on video. Ownership makes the difference.
Around 3
By three, most children are physically and emotionally ready for a bed, floor or otherwise. The reason to choose a floor bed at this age is practical rather than developmental: it takes a full-size single mattress, it moves house easily, and a child can still climb in and out without a step. Getting dressed becomes part of the morning routine, which is when a low Sofi kids' wardrobe with clothes at the child's height starts to earn its place next to the bed.
Making the move: what helps
- Keep the routine, change the bed. Same bath, same books, same song, same time. The only new thing should be the bed.
- Put the bed where the cot was. Familiar view from the pillow, same wall, same distance from the door. Move it later if you want to.
- Introduce it in daylight. Naps and story time on the floor bed before it becomes the night bed. Some families set it up alongside the cot and let the child choose for a stretch.
- Expect the walkabout. A child who has just discovered they can get up will get up. Walk them back calmly, without a conversation, as many times as it takes. It passes.
- Use a gate, not a locked door. A stair gate at the bedroom door keeps the child in a proofed room but keeps the door open, which matters to most toddlers.
- Do not go back and forth. Once the cot is gone, it is gone. Bringing it back after a bad night teaches the wrong lesson.
If the first attempt fails outright, that is information, not failure. Wait a couple of months and try again.
Room-proofing for a floor bed in a Dubai apartment or villa
A floor bed only works if the room around it is safe for a child who is up and about while you are asleep. Walk in at night, sit on the floor, and look at the room from there.
In an apartment
- Balcony doors locked, and a lock the child cannot reach. This is the single most important item for high-rise families.
- Window restrictors on any window that opens.
- Blind and curtain cords tied up out of reach. Most Dubai apartments have chain-operated blinds; the chain needs a cleat or a tensioner.
- Sockets covered. UAE sockets sit low on the wall in many buildings.
- Furniture anchored. A wardrobe or a bookcase can tip if a child climbs it.
- Bed away from the AC vent so cold air does not fall on the sleeper all night.
In a villa
- Stair gates top and bottom, and at the bedroom door if the room is upstairs.
- En-suite bathroom door closed and, if possible, latched from the outside. Toilets and bath taps are irresistible.
- Rooms in villas are larger, so the bed can sit well clear of the vent, the door and the window. Use the space.
- If the child shares with a sibling, put the floor bed nearest the door and keep the space between beds clear.
Everything in this list is generic. It applies to any floor bed from anyone, and to a mattress on the floor.
From the workshop
The Sofi Montessori floor bed suits the eighteen-months-to-three window in which most families make the move. The rail on the open side is low and partial: high enough to stop a sleeper rolling out, low enough that a child in that window can step over it, and it dips to an open section so they do not have to. The head and foot panels each have a cut-out handle, which makes the bed easy for two people to carry, and which every toddler then uses to pull themselves up. It arrives assembled, so the day it is delivered is the day it becomes the bed. It takes a standard 90 × 200 cm single mattress, and it is made to order in our own Dubai workshop, in sealed birch plywood, with a water-based stain in Natural, Snow, Sand or Smoke.
For what else belongs in the room as your child grows, our age-by-age guide to Montessori furniture in Dubai goes through it stage by stage.
Frequently asked questions
Is 18 months too early for a floor bed?
No. Around 18 months is one of the most common ages to make the move, usually because the child has started climbing the cot. The room needs to be fully proofed first.
Can a baby sleep on a floor bed from birth?
Some Montessori families do, with a firm mattress on the floor and nothing else on it. Talk to your paediatrician first, and treat the whole room as the sleep space.
Is 3 too late to start a floor bed?
Not at all. At three the move is usually easy, and a floor bed that takes a 90 × 200 cm single mattress will last through primary school.
What if my toddler keeps getting out of bed?
Expect it in the first stretch. Walk them back calmly and repeatedly, keep the routine identical, and use a gate on the door rather than closing it. It settles.
Should I move my toddler to a floor bed before a new baby arrives?
If you can, make the move a few months before the baby comes, so the child owns the new bed before the cot is needed for someone else.
