Montessori furniture in Dubai: what actually matters, age by age

"Montessori furniture" has become a look as much as a method — pale wood, low shelves, a floor bed on Instagram. Underneath the aesthetic there is a simple idea worth holding onto: a child who can reach a thing, choose it and put it back learns to do those things. Furniture that requires an adult teaches the opposite.

Here is what that means practically, by age, and what we would and would not spend money on.

Birth to around 18 months

Very little is needed, and most of it is not furniture. The two pieces that earn their place are a floor bed and open shelving at floor height.

A floor bed removes the cot bars and lets a child get in and out on their own — which is either liberating or terrifying depending on your child and your nerves. It works when the room is genuinely safe to wake up alone in, and not before. Our Sofi Floor Bed is 90 x 200 cm, low, with nothing to climb.

Open play shelves matter more than they look. Toys in a deep box are invisible; the child tips the lot out and plays with none of it. Three or four things visible at eye level, rotated weekly, changes how a toddler plays. 18 months to three

This is the age where independence becomes the whole game, and where most homes hit the same wall: everything a child needs is above their head.

A low wardrobe solves dressing. A rail at 90 cm with two or three hanging choices on child-sized hangers means a toddler picks their own clothes, which is a small thing that produces a startling amount of pride. A front-facing bookcase solves books — covers visible rather than spines, so choosing is possible before reading is.

A table and chairs at the right height solves eating and drawing without a booster seat and a negotiation.

Three to six

Play gets more elaborate and more social. This is where open-ended pieces beat single-purpose ones. A play house that can be a shop one week and a hideout the next holds attention for years in a way a themed plastic kitchen does not. A climbing arch does the same thing for physical play, and folds against a wall when the flat has had enough of it.

It is also the age where storage becomes about tidying, not display — a wall garage for the toy car collection works because putting them away is part of the play.

What we would not buy

Anything sized for one year of a child's life. Anything painted, where the paint is the product. Anything with a licensed character on it — that is a two-year piece of furniture at best. And anything so precious that a child is told not to touch it, which defeats the exercise entirely.

A note on material, since this is a children's room

Everything we make is birch plywood with a water-based, non-toxic sealer and no paint or cladding. Children put their mouths on furniture. It seemed worth being able to answer that question honestly.
