Handmade wooden Christmas decorations in Dubai: a plywood tree, reindeer and heart houses

Douglas wooden Christmas tree in sealed birch plywood, a flat-pack tree that slots together without tools, handmade in Dubai by Plyconcept

Handmade wooden Christmas decorations suit Dubai better than almost anywhere: no needles on a tiled floor, nothing to water in an air-conditioned room, and nothing to carry down to the bins in January. Our seasonal pieces are a plywood tree, a reindeer and a set of three heart houses, all cut from sealed birch plywood in our Dubai workshop and finished in Natural, Snow, Sand or Smoke. They are made to order, so if you are reading this in September, October or November you are reading it at the right time.

Why a wooden tree makes sense in a Dubai apartment

A real tree in the UAE is flown in, dries out fast in air-conditioning, drops needles onto porcelain that a robot vacuum then spreads through the flat, and goes out with the rubbish after New Year. An artificial tree sheds plastic, takes up half a cupboard for most of the year and never quite looks like anything. A wooden tree is a third option: a piece of furniture for a season. It stands up in minutes, holds the decorations you already own, looks like itself rather than a pretend pine, and when the season ends it comes apart and goes flat into the cupboard.

It also suits the way the season is celebrated here. Dubai is full of families who mark Christmas a long way from where they grew up, in homes with white walls and a lot of light, and many who do not celebrate it but like the house to feel festive in December. Pale wood works in both homes.

Douglas, the plywood tree

The Douglas wooden Christmas tree is our take on the traditional shape: a tree cut in flat birch plywood with places along its branches to hang garlands and decorations. It reads as a tree from across the room and as a piece of joinery up close, with the layered plywood edge showing along every branch. Dimensions are on the product page; it is tall enough to be the tree in a living room, not a table-top ornament.

How it goes together

Douglas arrives as flat panels that slot together without screws or tools. Stand it up, hang the decorations, and in January take it apart the same way; the panels store flat behind a wardrobe or under a bed, which in an apartment is the difference between a tree you keep and one you give away. There is nothing to lose and nothing to tighten.

How to decorate it

Less than a pine. The tree has a shape of its own, so it wants a few things hung with intent rather than a full cover of tinsel. Wooden beads, paper stars, a string of warm LED lights wound along the branches, a few glass baubles that catch the sun through the window. LED lights stay cool, which matters on wood; candles and anything that heats up do not belong on any tree, wooden or otherwise. Children can decorate the lower branches themselves, and a bauble knocked off by a small hand lands on the floor, not in a bed of needles.

Rudy, the reindeer

The Rudy wooden reindeer is the piece that ends up staying out past January. He is cut in birch plywood, oiled and sealed, and like the tree he arrives as flat panels that slot together without screws or tools, so he stands in a hallway, on a sideboard, or beside the tree, and comes apart to store. There is no red nose. He is a reindeer in pale wood with a straight face, and the finish decides the mood: Natural is a Scandinavian cabin, Snow is a white Christmas in a white room, Smoke is a reindeer in fog.

Rudy is the first thing children go to. A ribbon round his neck for December, and nothing at all for the rest of the year if you decide he lives in the hallway now.

Heart Houses: a set of three

The Heart Houses wooden decoration set is three small houses in sealed birch plywood, in three heights, each with a heart cut through the front. They arrive assembled. Put them in a row on a sideboard, on a windowsill against the evening light, or at the foot of the tree as a village. A tea light behind the heart cut-out throws a small heart of light onto the wall; use a battery candle rather than a flame, because they are wood and it is a home. Three houses in the same finish read as a set; three in different finishes read as a street.

They are the easiest of the three pieces to give, because they need no space and no assembly, and they are the one people keep out in a nursery or a child's room long after December.

Finishes for a pale Dubai Christmas

Most homes here have white walls, pale floors and a great deal of daylight, and a dark green tree with red baubles fights all of it. Pale wood does not. Snow, a white water-based stain with the grain still visible, gives a white tree that is still a wooden tree; against white walls it is quiet and against a wall of glass it glows in the afternoon. Natural birch is warmer and the most Scandinavian of the four; it suits paper stars, linen ribbon and wooden beads. Sand is warmer still, for a home with beige stone floors and a lot of brass. Smoke, a soft grey, is the choice for a scheme of greens, whites and silver, and it makes Rudy look like he walked out of a mist.

The stain goes on before the sealer, so the colour is in the wood and the grain shows through all four. Because no two sheets of birch are the same, no two trees are quite the same, which is the point of a handmade one.

Order early: everything is made to order

Nothing is made ahead. Every tree, reindeer and set of houses is cut, sanded, finished and wrapped after the order is placed, and the run-up to December is the busiest time of the year in the workshop. The current lead time is shown at checkout and confirmed when you order, and it is the honest answer to when to order: early enough that the piece is finished before the season starts, not during it. September and October orders are the calm ones, when there is time to send a photograph of your tree on the bench. November orders are the ones we work late for. December orders we will always try, but we will tell you plainly if the answer is next year.

Delivery is across the UAE, including Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and Al Ain, with the options for your emirate shown at checkout. Prices on the site include 5% VAT — the price you see is the price you pay — and a VAT invoice is issued with every order.

Gifting

The Heart Houses are the gift: three small pieces in a box, in the finish that suits the person, needing no space and no assembly. Rudy is a gift for a child's room that will still be there when the child is ten. Douglas is a gift for a family who have just arrived in Dubai and are facing their first December without a tree. And for the friend who has been here longer than anyone, a Khalli Walli wooden wall plaque, in the same birch, says the thing every long-term resident says by their second year. If a gift needs to go to a different address, put that address at checkout and message us so we know it is a gift.

From the workshop

The seasonal pieces are cut from the same birch sheets as the sideboards, and they get the same edges. A tree has a great deal of edge: every branch is a cut, and every cut is sanded through the grits until the layers read as one smooth line, then the tips are rounded so a child reaching for a bauble meets a curve. The slots that hold the panels together are cut a fraction tight and eased by hand until they push home with a little resistance and stay, because a tree that wobbles is not a tree anyone relaxes around. Then stain if there is one, then sealer over every face and edge, then the panels are stacked flat, interleaved and wrapped. Rudy is oiled before he is sealed, which brings the grain up, and we check him standing on the bench before he is packed, because a reindeer that leans is a reindeer that falls.

Frequently asked questions

Is a wooden Christmas tree practical in a Dubai apartment?

More than a real or artificial one. No needles, no water, no allergies, and in January it comes apart and stores flat. It stands up without tools and holds the decorations you already own.

How does the Douglas tree store after Christmas?

It arrives as flat panels that slot together without screws or tools, and it comes apart the same way. The panels store flat behind a wardrobe or under a bed.

Can I put lights on a wooden tree?

Yes. Use LED lights, which stay cool. No candles or anything that heats up, on this or any tree.

Which finish should I choose for a white apartment?

Snow for a white tree that still shows the grain; Natural for a warmer, Scandinavian feel. Smoke suits green and silver schemes. Samples are available if you are unsure.

When should I order Christmas decorations from Plyconcept?

As early as you can. Everything is made to order and the run-up to December is our busiest time. The current lead time is shown at checkout; September and October orders are the calm ones.

Can the Heart Houses be sent as a gift?

Yes. They arrive assembled and need no space, which makes them the easiest of the three to give. Put the recipient's address at checkout and message us so we know it is a gift.
