The Sofi Floor Bed takes a standard 90 × 200 cm single mattress, the size usually sold in the UAE as a European single. That is the only dimension you need. For a toddler, choose a firm mattress that is not too deep, with a breathable cover, and put a washable waterproof protector on it before the first night. The rest of this guide explains why that size, how to judge firmness and depth, what a hot climate does to a mattress, where to find one, and how to deal with spills.
Why a floor bed should take a 90 × 200 cm mattress
A floor bed is supposed to last. A child who moves into one at eighteen months should still be sleeping in it at eight, and the only way that works is if the bed takes a full-size single mattress from the start. A cot-size or toddler-size mattress buys a smaller footprint for a couple of years and then forces another purchase.
The 90 × 200 cm single is the sensible standard for three reasons. It is long enough for a child until well into primary school and, in most cases, for a teenager. It is sold by most mattress retailers in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, so you are never dependent on one supplier. And fitted sheets, protectors and duvets in that size are everywhere, which is not true of odd sizes.
That is why the Sofi Montessori floor bed is built around it. The inside of the frame holds a 90 × 200 cm mattress edge to edge, so there is no gap along the sides for a hand or foot to slip into.
Common UAE mattress sizes and whether they fit a floor bed
Mattress names in the UAE are unreliable. "Single" can mean several sizes depending on where the retailer sources from, and "twin" and "super single" are used loosely. Always buy by the dimensions in centimetres. The table is for the Sofi Floor Bed; for any other bed, check the product page.
| Size as usually sold | Typical use | Fits the Sofi Floor Bed? |
|---|---|---|
| Cot mattress | Cots and some toddler beds | No. Far too small; it would leave a wide gap on every side. |
| Toddler-bed mattress | Toddler beds and convertible cots | No. Shorter and narrower than the frame. |
| Shorter single (often labelled "UK single") | Older UK-sourced bed frames | No. It is shorter than the frame, so there is a gap at the foot. Check the product page of any bed before buying this size. |
| Standard single, 90 × 200 cm (often labelled "European single") | Most single beds sold in the UAE | Yes. This is the size the Sofi is built for. |
| Wider single (often labelled "super single" or "twin XL") | Guest beds, some kids' beds | No. Too wide for the frame. Check the product page. |
| Small double and larger | Adult beds | No. |
If a retailer cannot tell you the dimensions in centimetres, buy elsewhere.
How firm should a toddler's floor bed mattress be?
Firm. A young child is light and does not need the give that an adult mattress provides; what they need is a flat, supportive surface they cannot sink into. For a baby, this is a safety matter: the surface should be firm enough that it does not mould around the face. For a toddler it is mostly about posture and about the mattress holding its shape when a child bounces on it, which they will.
Both foam and pocket-sprung mattresses can be firm. A dense foam mattress is lighter to move and easier to stand on its side to air; a pocket-sprung one tends to breathe better. Either is fine on a slatted base, which is what the Sofi has. You do not need a box spring or a divan base under a floor bed mattress, and adding one would raise the sleeping surface to a height that defeats the point.
How deep should the mattress be?
Not very. The whole idea of a floor bed is that the top of the mattress sits close to the floor, so a very deep adult-style mattress raises the sleeping surface and turns a floor bed into an ordinary low bed. Look for a mattress on the slimmer side of what the retailer offers in 90 × 200 cm. If you are considering a particularly deep one, message us with the depth before you buy and we will tell you how it will sit in the frame.
Breathable covers and mattresses in a hot, humid climate
Bedrooms in the UAE are air-conditioned, which keeps the air cool but also dry and moving, and when the AC cycles off in summer the humidity rises quickly. A mattress that traps heat and moisture becomes unpleasant, and a child who sweats at night wakes.
- Cover fabric. Cotton, or a cotton blend, or a bamboo-viscose knit. Avoid vinyl or fully plastic covers except as a thin protector layer.
- Mattress construction. Open-cell foam or pocket springs breathe better than dense closed-cell foam. Some foam mattresses are built with airflow channels; that helps.
- Base. A slatted base lets air move under the mattress. The Sofi's base is slatted and the frame stands a little off the tile on short feet for this reason.
- Airing. Once in a while, stand the mattress on its side for an afternoon with the AC running, and wipe the slats.
- New-mattress smell. Foam mattresses often arrive rolled and can smell for a while. Unroll it and let it air in a ventilated room before the first night.
Where to buy a 90 × 200 cm mattress in the UAE
You will not struggle. Mattress specialists in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the large furniture and department stores, and the online marketplaces all sell 90 × 200 cm singles, and many offer delivery across the Emirates. When you enquire, ask for "ninety by two hundred" or "European single" and confirm the dimensions in writing before paying. A few practical points:
- Ask about the return policy if the firmness is wrong. Some retailers allow a trial period; many do not for mattresses.
- Check how it arrives. Rolled foam mattresses fit in a lift; a pocket-sprung one may not, which matters in a high-rise.
- Buy the protector and two fitted sheets at the same time, in the same size, so bedding changes at 2 a.m. are not a search.
Protecting a floor bed mattress against spills
Toddlers leak. Water bottles, night-time accidents, the occasional bout of illness. The mattress needs a waterproof protector, and the frame needs to be one that wipes clean.
- A breathable waterproof protector. The thin, quilted or knitted type with a waterproof membrane, not a crackling plastic sheet. It goes under the fitted sheet and comes off for the wash.
- Two of them. One on the bed, one in the wash. Keep the spare on a low shelf in the child's Sofi kids' wardrobe so it can be found in the dark.
- Wipe the frame, do not soak it. The Sofi is sealed birch plywood, so a spill that reaches the wood wipes off with a damp cloth. Do not leave liquid sitting on it, and do not use harsh cleaners on the finish.
- Keep drinks off the bed. A small table beside the bed for the water bottle keeps most spills off the mattress altogether, and bedtime books on a front-facing Sofi Toddler Bookcase keep the pillow end clear.
From the workshop
People sometimes ask why we do not sell a mattress with the bed. The honest answer is that we make furniture, not mattresses, and we would rather you buy one from someone who does that well, in the firmness your child needs, than take a bundled one from us. What we do instead is build the frame around the mattress you will buy: the inside of every Sofi is cut to a 90 × 200 cm mattress, the slats are set to support it evenly, and the head and foot panels are low so the mattress top, not the frame, is the surface your child sees. Each frame is made to order in our own Dubai workshop, in sealed birch plywood with a water-based stain in Natural, Snow, Sand or Smoke. It is a heavy piece for its height, because plywood is dense and because a light frame slides on tile. The bed arrives assembled; the mattress goes in and the bed is done.
Frequently asked questions
What size mattress fits a Montessori floor bed?
For the Sofi Floor Bed, a standard 90 × 200 cm single. For any other bed, check the dimensions on its product page and buy the mattress by centimetres, not by name.
Is a 90 × 200 cm mattress easy to find in the UAE?
Yes. It is a standard single size sold widely in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, usually labelled "European single". Bedding in that size is equally easy to find.
Should a toddler's mattress be firm or soft?
Firm. A flat, supportive surface a child cannot sink into. Foam or pocket-sprung are both fine on a slatted base.
Can I use a thick adult mattress on a floor bed?
You can, but a deep mattress raises the sleeping surface and loses the point of a floor bed. Choose something on the slimmer side, and ask us about the depth if you are unsure.
Do I need a mattress protector on a floor bed?
Yes. A breathable waterproof protector under the fitted sheet, and ideally a second one for the wash. The Sofi's sealed plywood wipes clean if a spill gets through.
